The Deskstar 7K1000 family was put on a strict diet that brought it from a five-platter design down to only three platters; this is the same number used by the new Western Digital Caviar Black drive. As a result, this has also had an impact on the overall weight, which decreased from 700 g with the Deskstar 7K1000 to 680 g for the 7K1000.B...

The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B (HDT721010SLA360) internal hard drive may have slower transfer speeds than other "green" drives, but its cool, quiet and energy efficient. It is also cheap, making it an attractive option. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B has three platters and a 16MB buffer. It has an areal density of 244 gigabits per square inch. Bad Slower read/write speeds than some other 7200rpm hard drives...

On paper, the 640GB Deskstar looks like far better value than the 500GB model, with an extra 140GB of space for a mere £6. The cache on this drive has dropped to 16MB, though, and the range of features is limited. Performance was in the same disappoint...
Bottom line Good value but merely mediocre performance across the board...
