Hard disk drives are today's fastest permanent storage media and have a large capacity. For this two reasons they are the most used storage medium in computers and servers. When buying a new hard disk, there are three important things to consider: - The connection of the disk to the computer or other device you will be using it with has a big influence on the speed with which data can be read from/written to the disk. Make sure the connection of the disk you buy is compatible with your computer! - The rotational speed is also important for the speed with which data can be read from/written to the disk and determines the time it takes to find a file on the disk. - Last but not least, the storage capacity of the disk, i.e. the amount of data that can be stored on the disk.

The Deskstar 7K1000 family was put on a strict diet that brought it from a five-platter design down to only three platters; this is the same number used by the new Western Digital Caviar Black drive. As a result, this has also had an impact on the overall weight, which decreased from 700 g with the Deskstar 7K1000 to 680 g for the 7K1000.B...

The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B (HDT721010SLA360) internal hard drive may have slower transfer speeds than other "green" drives, but its cool, quiet and energy efficient. It is also cheap, making it an attractive option. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B has three platters and a 16MB buffer. It has an areal density of 244 gigabits per square inch. To test out the drives speed, we transferred 18.1GB of files between the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B and our testbed PC, which uses a Western Digital Veloc...

Bad Slower read/write speeds than some other 7200rpm hard drives...
Bottom line The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B (HDT721010SLA360) internal hard drive provides energy efficiency at an excellent price. If you don’t mind its speed and want a hard drive that is cheap to buy and run, this is well worth a look...

On paper, the 640GB Deskstar looks like far better value than the 500GB model, with an extra 140GB of space for a mere £6. The cache on this drive has dropped to 16MB, though, and the range of features is limited. Performance was in the same disappoint...
Bottom line Good value but merely mediocre performance across the board...

Hitachis 750GB 7K1000.B-750 has one of the lowest costs per gigabyte in this test, beaten only by a fraction of a penny by Seagates 1.5TB Barracuda. It also has the smallest cache of the 3?in disks, at 8MB. This will have little impact when copyin...

Hitachi’s promise of “balanced power and performance for desktop performance” is pretty close to what we measured, as the drive showed excellent idle power and the best performance per watt ratio for streaming reads of all 7,200 RPM hard drives...
